How the free ATS resume checker works
Drop in your resume as a PDF, DOCX or TXT file. It is read in your browser and never uploaded.
The checker parses the file the way an applicant tracking system would and runs every published check against it.
You get a score out of 100, a grade, each finding with the exact line it refers to, and the fix for it.
Fix the file, run it again, and the score moves. The same file always gets the same score.
The methodology, published
Every check, every weight, every threshold.
This list is generated from the same code that scores your file, so what you read here is exactly what runs. The scan is deterministic: the same file always gets the same score.
Parse fidelity35 points
Password protectionup to 35 points
A password protected file cannot be opened by parsing software at all. The application system sees nothing.
No extractable textup to 35 points
A scanned or image only PDF has pictures of words, not words. Parsers read the text layer; when there is none, the resume arrives blank.
Multi column layoutup to 10 points
Parsers read left to right, top to bottom. Side by side columns interleave into scrambled sentences, and dates detach from the jobs they belong to.
Content inside tablesup to 8 points
Many parsers flatten tables cell by cell in an order you do not control, splitting job entries and mixing columns together.
Content inside text boxesup to 8 points
Text boxes float outside the document body. Some parsers skip them entirely, so whatever they hold may never be seen.
Contact details in the header or footerup to 6 points
Word headers and footers live outside the document body, and a well known class of parsers never reads them. Your email and phone can silently vanish.
Type below 9 pointsup to 4 points
Sub 9 point type is a signal of a crowded layout, reads poorly for the humans who see the resume after the software, and often comes from squeezing two pages into one.
Decorative bullet glyphsup to 3 points
Ornamental symbols (stars, arrows, check marks) are not in every parser character map and can come through as junk characters glued to your first word.
Unreadable charactersup to 8 points
Replacement characters in extracted text mean the file's font encoding does not map back to real letters. Whole words can be lost.
Consistency10 points
Date format consistencyup to 4 points
Parsers build your employment timeline from date patterns. Mixing formats ("Jan 2020" on one job, "01/2020" on the next) breaks the timeline and can misreport gaps.
Readable employment datesup to 3 points
Roles without machine readable dates cannot be placed on a timeline, and some systems treat them as omissions.
Keyword stuffingup to 3 points
Repeating one term dozens of times reads as gaming the system, and modern screening flags it rather than rewarding it. This check warns about stuffing; it never coaches it.
Evidence in bullets25 points
Numbers in your bulletsup to 15 points
A bullet with a number (revenue, percentage, team size, time saved) reads as evidence. A bullet without one reads as a job description. We count bullets carrying at least one digit.
Overlong bulletsup to 6 points
A bullet past roughly 40 words is a paragraph. It buries the result, and skimming readers (human and software ranking alike) take nothing from it.
Enough bullets to judgeup to 4 points
Work history told in dense paragraphs instead of bullets is hard for parsers to segment and hard for people to skim.
Clarity15 points
Filler phrasesup to 6 points
Phrases like "responsible for" and "team player" carry no information and displace the evidence that does. Recruiters are trained to skip them.
Lengthup to 4 points
Past two pages, reading drops off sharply, and a very short resume gives parsers and people too little to work with.
Run on sentencesup to 3 points
Sentences past roughly 35 words force rereading. In a resume they usually hide three achievements inside one line.
Summary lengthup to 2 points
A summary past about 80 words stops being a summary. The first thing a reader sees should be scannable in seconds.
Completeness15 points
Contact blockup to 7 points
Parsers map your email, phone, location, and profile link into fixed fields. A missing one is an empty field the recruiter has to chase.
Core sectionsup to 8 points
Parsers look for the standard section names to know which lines are jobs, schools, and skills. When a section is missing or renamed, its content lands in the wrong field or nowhere.
Grades
A+ at 92 or above, A at 85 or above, B at 70 or above, C at 55 or above, D at 40 or above, and F below 40.
Free ATS resume checker, the questions people ask
Short answers about what an ATS score is, what this checker looks at, and what happens to your file.
What is an ATS resume checker?
An applicant tracking system, or ATS, is the software an employer uses to store and read applications. An ATS resume checker reads your resume the way that software does and reports what it could and could not extract: your contact details, your dates, your titles, your skills. This one also scores the content itself, whether your bullets carry evidence and whether the document is complete and consistent.
Is this ATS checker really free, and do I need an account?
Yes and no. Every check, every finding, the score, the grade and every fix are free, and there is no account, no email and no trial. The scan runs on your device. Signing up is only for the rest of iapplyai.app, which scores real job postings against your resume and writes the application.
What is a good ATS score?
On this checker, 90 or above is an A and 80 or above is a B. The grade thresholds and every category weight are published on this page and generated from the same code that scores your file. A lower score is not a verdict on you; it is a list of specific things in the file to fix, each with the line it refers to.
Does my resume pass ATS if it scores well here?
No tool can promise that, including this one. Every employer configures its system differently and most decisions happen on their side with rules you cannot see. What a clean score here means is that the part you control is right: the file parses, the content is complete, and the bullets show evidence. Those help with every system.
Should I stuff my resume with keywords for the ATS?
No. Stuffing keywords is one of the things this checker warns about, because modern screening flags it rather than rewarding it. Use the real words for your real experience, in bullets that say what you did and what happened. Matching a specific posting is a separate step, and that is what iapplyai.app does after you sign up.
Which resume formats work, and what about a two column or designed resume?
PDF, DOCX and TXT. A two column layout, tables, text boxes and images are exactly the things an ATS parser mangles, and the checker reports when they appear in your file. Legacy DOC files are flagged as an unsafe format instead of being parsed.
What happens to my resume after I upload it?
Nothing leaves your browser. There is no upload, no server call and no storage. Close the tab and the file is gone. That is why the checker can be free for anyone at any volume.
See which jobs that resume actually wins.
Two complete applications free. No credit card. Nothing renews.
